The exhibition “Statement Made” attempts to document the contemporary art scene in the present tense. It conveys the preoccupations of visual artists who use their work to articulate statements with which to describe the current reality and comment on it. In “Statement Made” the viewer is called upon to follow an experiential route where each work leads to the next in an uncommon narrative.
The show begins with the work TURISM IN GREECE, which was created by the celebrated painter Yannis Moralis in 1961 and presents the different viewpoint and the vision that prevailed in Greece in the early ’60s.
Starting from this work and the unfulfilled expectations it reflects, the exhibition examines issues like the financial crisis and the current situation in Greece, the causes that led to it and their roots deep in the past or the attitude of other countries, while the problem of emigration in past and present times is a key point of reference in one section of the show.
The concerns of the artists revolve around such universal issues as the various conflicts all over the world, war, environmental awareness as well as economic matters like our unabated consumerism. Man, the experiential perception of memory, the isolation brought about by the internet and the social media constitute the main axes of the art produced and presented today.
“Statement Made” attempts to present more than a snapshot of the current art scene; it aspires to establish a discourse among the works on show, reflect the contemporary reality and showcase the multifaceted preoccupations of the artists and the variety of media they employ.
The artists in the exhibition come from the galleries that participate in the main programme of Art-Athina.
